Breast Reduction is a surgical procedure designed to reduce the over all volume of the breasts by raising the breasts and re-positions the nipples if necessary. Breast Implants and possibly Liposuction are sometimes used to achieve the desired shape and volume. Of course, every patient is different and has different goals and your surgeon will explain how your goals can best be achieved. The following information about breast reduction will give you a general idea about the procedure. During the breast reduction procedure, the surgeon will make an incision around the areola to help hid any scaring with the goal of leaving nerves and blood vessels attached to reduce any breast or nipple numbness after surgery. Two other incisions are made from the base of the areola downward to the fold area of the breast where the breast meets the abdomen. And lastly, an incision is made along the fold of the breast, again where the breast meets the abdomen.

The excess skin between the two downward incisions is completely removed, and excess fat and glands are carefully removed from the breast using liposuction. During this part of the procedure, the surgeon will reshape and contour the breasts, and possibly use breast implants. In the final stages of the procedure, the surgeon sutures the areola and nipple in it’s new higher position, draws the bottom of the breast together with what now appears as a single incision, and closes the incision in the fold of the breast to complete the procedure.
